Opportunity From Internet Influence Shift

just returned from 4 days at the World Internet Summit in Atlanta, and my head is so full of ideas that it's difficult to sort them out. I have been spending no small amount of time investigating the potential of the internet for about a year and I am convinced it is the place that will lead untold future waves of change.

Already some studies show viewers spending more time on social media sites than on CNN. That changes everything!, and hopefully for the good. No longer does news and information need to be shoveled to us from a few sources which have a bias. Everyone has a bias, just like everyone has a nose, unless something unfortunate has happened, so we can be sure that the news we hear or read is tilted in some direction. The news anchors that are the most trusted are the ones who can disguise their agenda most skillfully.

Now we have the opportunity to dig out the truth ourselves if we care enough. I'm worried that many of us are so willing to take what we hear as fact that we won't go the extra mile to find truth.
Sorry, too far down that rabbit trail, as important as it is.

As eyeballs leave traditional sources of news and entertainment, so does influence. Many of us forget that the point of radio and TV was to influence you to buy a product. So entertainers were employed to get our attention. Networks were established that dominated this new medium. Influence was concentrated at these hubs and dispensed in exchange for advertising dollars.

Now, for Pete's sake, anyone can own a radio or TV station on the internet for free. Maybe you would like to own a magazine or a newspaper. You can do that. Maybe a store, but probably not a barbershop. All these endeavors can be worked out of the home so stay at home moms are finding ways to get their piece of the action. Of course, they are not the only ones. Folks are coming out of the woodwork, out of unemployment, out of jobs they get no satisfaction from, even out of retirement to take advantage of this massive shift in influence.

Can you see the opportunity here? If not for you, maybe for your children.
